Resembling M87, it is a huge elliptical galaxy. It is an interesting sight that three small galaxies surround this galaxy. There are supposed to a number of extremely small galaxies near M49, but they are not visible.
M49 (NGC 4472): It is circular, large, and bright. It has a large bright core and brightness gradually drops off toward the outlying areas. If faint haze is included, its extent is huge. It is a fine sight with a bright star close to this galaxy.
NGC 4464: It is small and star-like with some haze around it. It is not a difficult object.
NGC 4470: It is small, circular and diffuse.
NGC 4492: It is small and diffuse with weak central condensation. It looks elliptical.
