M43 is at the head of the Great Orion Nebula. As it is extremely complex, I sketched the top part. The nebulosity is divided into the northern and southern regions. The northern region extends east-west. The outline of the northern side is bright and the eastern side is pointed with a star at the tip. The south side is separated from the southern region by a dark band.
At the center of the southern region lies a bright star. The outlines of the north and east sides are sharp. The southeastern part looks mottled.. The southwestern part is faint and diffuse.
