It is a considerably large and bright globular cluster. It is well known for its oval shape. It is grainy with little resolution and only in the outlying areas faint stars are resolved. Its oval shape is easily noticeable but it looks rectangular rather than oval. The center appears as a bright core. There is a bright double in the north of the core. They may not belong to the cluster.
