Observing site: Daikanbo
Transparency/seeing/sky darkness: 2/3/3
Instruments: 32cm Dobsonian with XL14 at 110x
Width of field: 0.6 degree
This is a globular cluster representing the northern sky. Its features are well-developed lines of stars and a Y-shaped dark area. Both are just a visual appearance, not true structures. The concentration of the stars is just about right, not too strong, not too weak. It is also bright enough for naked-eye viewing. These features make this cluster a remarkable northern globular. Generally, it is well resolved, but the center looks very grainy instead of clear resolution overwhelmed by brightness of concentrated stars. A number of bright stars are conspicuous in the outlying areas. Five lines of stars are confirmed. The one running to the southeast branches out into two at the end providing a fine sight. There is also a bright, long line of stars running to the northeast. These two are conspicuous. The other three lines are short looking like protrusions. There is a bright star where the southeast line branches out. A Y-shaped dark area is seen near it. To see this, you need averted vision and patience because the contrast is low.
